Lady Agnes Stewart
Lady Agnes Stewart was born illegitimately.〔G.E. Cokayne; with Vicary Gibbs, H.A. Doubleday, Geoffrey H. White, Duncan Warrand and Lord Howard de Walden, editors, The Complete Peerage of England, Scotland, Ireland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom, Extant, Extinct or Dormant, new ed., 13 volumes in 14 (1910-1959; reprint in 6 volumes, Gloucester, U.K.: Alan Sutton Publishing, 2000), volume II, page 238. Hereinafter cited as The Complete Peerage.〕 She was the daughter of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Buchan and Margaret Murray.〔 On 31 October 1552 she was legitimized, confirmed by Queen Mary of Guise, on 31 October 1552, under the Great Seal of Scotland.〔
== Marriages ==
Lady Agnes Stewart, married first Adam Hepburn, 2nd Earl of Bothwell in August 1511, secondly Alexander Home, 3rd Lord Home, thirdly John Maxwell, 4th Lord Maxwell and fourthly Cuthbert Ramsay.〔〕 They had at least eight children. Adam Hepburn, 2nd Earl of Bothwell was killed at the Battle of Flodden on 9 September 1513, she died in February, 1557.〔〔Alison Weir, Britain's Royal Family: A Complete Genealogy (London, U.K.: The Bodley Head, 1999), page 240. From August 1511, her married name became Hepburn. As a result of her marriage, Agnes Stewart was styled as Countess of Bothwell. From between 9 September 1513 and 25 February 1513/14, her married name became Home. From between 1520 and 15 November 1525, her married name became Maxwell. From before 13 December 1549, her married name became Ramsay.〔
